RÁN – The Sea Goddess. An Old Norse drowning chant: a solo female völva voice held close and dry against an ocean of reverb, a submerged war choir, muffled drums and bone flute. Original composition by Ravengard. She lays a net across the bottom of the sea and keeps everyone who falls into it. Norse sailors carried gold with them so that she would receive them well — which means they went to sea having already paid for their own drowning. 📜 FULL LYRICS Ek legg net mitt. Ek legg net mitt. Ek legg net mitt. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ABOUT THIS TRACK Rán holds a net across the floor of the sea and keeps every sailor who drowns. Her nine daughters are the waves, and each of them has a name: Himinglæva, Dúfa, Blóðughadda, Hefring, Uðr, Hrönn, Bylgja, Bára, Kólga. The second verse is nothing but those names, because saying them out loud is one of the most beautiful things in Old Norse. Norse sailors carried gold to sea so that Rán would welcome them properly if they drowned. They set out having already paid for it. So she never threatens anyone in this track. The bridge is the warmest, gentlest passage on the whole album: my hall is lit, a fire is burning in the middle of the floor, the table is set, the seat is yours, it is not cold here, rest, you are home. That is the horror. She is not cruel. She is hospitable. Instruments: solo female völva vocal, submerged male war choir, muffled frame drum, bowed lyre, tagelharpa, bone flute, water.
