Bed Bath & Beyond was once worth seventeen billion dollars; by 2023 its stock was cancelled down to zero and more than three hundred and sixty stores stood locked and empty.
This documentary follows the sixteen-year run of CEO Steven Temares, who spent an estimated eleven point eight billion dollars on stock buybacks instead of building the e-commerce and distribution systems that Amazon and Wayfair were building at the same time. It tracks the giant blue twenty-percent coupon that quietly became the company's entire business model, the 2019 activist investor letter that forced Temares out, Mark Tritton's failed private-label overhaul brought in from Target, the inventory collapse that followed, and the 2022 meme-stock spike tied to Ryan Cohen's stake and sale, the shareholder lawsuits that followed, and CFO Gustavo Arnal's death. It ends with the April 2023 bankruptcy filing and the twenty-one point five million dollar sale of the name itself to Overstock.
The video lays out, filing by filing and quarter by quarter, who made each decision along the way, and who was still cashing out while the company kept warning everyone it was dying.
