Why is boar meat off the menu in so many regions? We trace the radioactive history of the wild boars to find the answer.
Domestic pigs and wild boars are genetically the same species, yet their paths diverged sharply after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. As the exclusion zone became a sanctuary, these animals began to migrate across borders, carrying an invisible legacy in their tissue.
Soil core analysis shows that the fallout from the event deposited long-lived isotopes like Cesium-137 directly into the food chain. Because these animals forage deep in the earth, they continue to accumulate these radioactive elements decades later, meaning boar meat remains a cautionary tale about the lasting environmental impacts of nuclear accidents.
