Wellington Ghost Town - Stevens Pass

Join us on an adventure to the Wellington Ghost Town and the Old Cascade Tunnel. 5 Minute Drives is trying something new as I step in front of the camera a bit. If you driven over Stevens Pass you may have noticed another road across the valley. Just as you reach the ski area there is a turn for the Tye Scenic Road, or the Old Cascade Highway. Mostly paved it winds back down the valley to the site of the old town of Wellington. Renamed Tye after an avalanche killed 96 people in 1910, and later abandoned when the rail line over the pass moved away. You can still hike the old railroad grade and glimpse the entrance to the Old Cascade Tunnel. But don't go in! The collapsing tunnel creates debris dams deep under the mountain that can fail without warning, creating a flash flood carrying rocks and other hazards blasting out of the tunnel like the ghost of some long forgotten steam locomotive. A wonderful drive and hike surrounded by trees, mountains, and history. Short enough to explore if you're heading over the pass.
