Why do railway bridges sometimes have two extra rails between the main tracks? They may look like spare rails, but trains normally never run on them. These extra rails, often called bridge guard rails, are part of a safety system designed for a very specific situation: what happens after a train has already derailed. If a wheel leaves the running rail near or on a bridge, the train still has enormous forward momentum. The danger is that the derailed wheelset can move sideways, pulling the vehicle away from the narrow path of the bridge. Guard rails help restrict that sideways movement and keep derailed equipment closer to the intended corridor. The most interesting part is that these rails may go thousands of train crossings without ever being used. They exist for the rare moment when the normal rails are no longer enough.
