Everyone quotes the same two numbers for the new San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge: $250 million and $6.5 billion. That's "26 times over budget." But the $250 million was never an estimate for the bridge that got built. It was a 1995 estimate for retrofitting the old one. Against the first real estimate for the new span (about $1.3 billion), the overrun is roughly four to five times, which is still enormous.
And the money may be the smaller half of the story. Thirty-two of ninety-six giant steel rods snapped in 2013, and a pair of 2014 state Senate committee investigations described engineers and inspectors being pushed aside when they questioned the welds.
This video separates two questions: what the bridge really cost, and what it took to find out whether it was built right.
