From Caifanes' self-titled 1988 debut album, "La Bestia Humana" is one of the record's darker, less commercial cuts, written by frontman Saúl Hernández, with a raw, visceral edge that fit right into the band's early post-punk, gothic-tinged sound. There's a fun deep cut here too: the guitar on this specific track was played by Gustavo Cerati of Soda Stereo, a rare collaboration between two of Latin rock's most important songwriters. This translation was a genuinely interesting technical challenge, and I wanted to use this upload to talk a bit about why. Japanese lyrics are built around mora, not syllables. A mora is a short, fixed-length rhythmic unit (think of a single beat), and most Japanese words break down into more moras than their Spanish counterparts have syllables. A short, punchy line in Spanish like "que tu lengua es una rapiña" often needs a noticeably longer Japanese line to carry the same meaning, since ideas that take a few syllables in Spanish can require several extra beats once broken into moras. That's a big part of why this cover's lines run longer than you might expect if you're used to hearing the original, it's not the meaning getting diluted, it's just how the rhythm of the language works. Beyond that, this song leans on some very specific, aggressive imagery, corrosion, disease, rot, possession, and getting that same rawness to land in Japanese meant leaning into some equally blunt phrasing. ‎⁨‪@BUCKTICK‬  Your fans believe you would make a perfect cover by Los Caifanes in Japanese.
