What happened to magnetos, the self-powered spark machine that once fired almost every car, truck, motorcycle, tractor and aircraft engine on earth?
This video explores how the magneto worked, why Robert Bosch and Gottlob Honold turned it into one of the most important components of the early twentieth century, and why it vanished from the automobile so completely that most drivers today have never heard the word. The answer has little to do with ignition and everything to do with the electric starter.
Along the way: the 1903 Wright Flyer that flew with no battery on board, Britain's wartime magneto famine after German supply was cut off, the 1918 seizure that left Robert Bosch legally barred from selling under his own name in America, and the regulation that quietly froze the technology in place for a century.
Yet the magneto never truly vanished. Two of them are still bolted to nearly every piston airplane engine flying today, because federal rules demand two ignition circuits with two separate sources of electrical energy, and a magneto meets that simply by existing. It was not until July 2023 that the FAA first approved replacing both magnetos on a certified aircraft with electronic ignition.
And here is the twist. The systems replacing it, including the Rotax 912, still generate their own spark power from engine rotation. The mechanism lost. The idea never did.
