I chanced upon this European-style structure in Guizhou. According to local legend, there was a wealthy man whose wife had been fascinated by Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle since childhood. She had long nurtured a princess dream: to own a castle standing on a lake island. After the couple built up their business and achieved success, the wealthy man traveled to many places. Eventually he found this isolated island in Wanfeng Lake. Surrounded by water and rolling mountains, it resembled a hidden paradise cut off from the world. He decided to construct a Gothic European castle here as a gift for his wife. Construction began in 2006. The total investment reached 240 million RMB. The castle was built on the island, with a suspension bridge specially built to connect it to the mainland. When he had nothing, she stayed faithfully beside him through hard times. She gradually forgot that casual childhood wish, yet he never let it slip from his mind. The castle features royal decor, knight armor and painting corridors. Every detail carries the tenderness he wanted to give her. Amid mountains and lake waters, the white spired castle rests quietly at the lake’s center. It looks as if it stepped out of a fairy tale book, earning the name China’s Neuschwanstein Castle. The greatest treasure in the world is never this castle. Rather, after all life’s hardships, he still remembers the girl who endured poverty with him and fulfills the dream she kept for a lifetime.
