What 8 Acres in New York Really Looks Like: Honest Homestead Tour — Pond, Barn, Orchard & Deer Stand Take a full homestead tour of our 8-acre property in Western New York. We show you everything outside — the house from 1978, the old horse barn we converted for chickens, 7 apple trees and grapes, the pond with grass carp, and the deer stand in the back field. This is starting a homestead from scratch. The front yard, the old siding and two chimneys, the garage, then the barn with 4 old horse stalls now holding our roosting chickens. Out back is field number one, old blueberry rows we will replant next spring, a turtle trap that already caught a snapping turtle, and deer tracks everywhere coming down to drink. We cleared the whole pond bank by hand — it was over my head with brush — and now the kids fish for huge grass carp while frogs and turtles keep it clean with no algae. Up top we put up the deer stand (platform is on backwards, I have to flip it) where an 8-point walked right through the opening. What should we add first? Goats, mini-Highlands, pigs, ponies?
