Can't stop thinking about it? In this easy English podcast, Emma and Jake explain why overthinking feels like solving a problem, and give you one simple question to ask yourself: "Can I do something about it today?"
Learn how to stop overthinking, how to stop overthinking at night, and how to speak about worries in natural English. Slow, clear English for A2 and B1 learners. About 20 minutes of listening practice.
In this episode:
• Jake's one-word message ("Ok.") that took his whole weekend
• Why your brain goes over and over the same thought (it's called rumination, and it comes from cows)
• The one question to ask yourself: "Can I do something about it today?"
• A short A or B quiz with three real-life situations
• 3 ideas that help you stop overthinking, and what happened to Jake on Monday
• The line to remember: "Put it down. You can pick it up tomorrow."
5 English expressions you learn today:
• read into (something) = find a hidden meaning in something, a meaning that maybe isn't there
• over and over = again and again, many times
• on my / your mind = you keep thinking about it; it stays in your head
• keep (someone) up (at night) = stop someone from sleeping because they're thinking or worrying
• sleep on it = wait until tomorrow before you decide
About the idea of rumination: psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema (Yale University) studied how thinking about a problem over and over usually brings no better answers and makes us feel worse. If you want to read more, see her book "Women Who Think Too Much" (2003).
Your turn! Write one sentence in the comments: "This week, ... is on my mind." Writing it in English is great practice, and it can help you put it down.
