Do you feel like everyone is ahead of you? Better jobs, nicer homes, better English? In this easy English podcast about comparing yourself to others, Emma and Jake explain why we compare, why it's not a fair game, and how to stop comparing and start learning from other people. In Jake's Spanish class, a classmate seemed so far ahead that he almost quit, especially after he said "I'm married" instead of "I'm tired"! Then he asked her one question, and her answer changed everything. Emma tells the story of a dinner with old friends, and the phone call that taught her: "Everyone shows the cake. Nobody shows the kitchen." You'll learn about social comparison (a famous idea from 1954), answer a real question out loud with us, and get three simple ideas for the days when everyone seems ahead of you. This episode is for A2-B1 learners who want to practice listening to slow, clear, natural English about daily life and personal growth, and who sometimes feel that they are falling behind. 5 useful expressions from this episode: • fall behind = be slower than other people, or not where you planned to be • catch up (with someone) = get to the same level as someone, after you were behind • look up to (someone) = admire someone and want to be a little like them • show off = try to make people see how good, rich or lucky you are • on the right track = going in a good direction, doing the right things Emma has taught English to adults for about ten years. Jake is a graphic designer who is learning Spanish, so he knows how it feels when others seem faster. Daily 20 is an easy English podcast for A2-B1 learners: about 20 minutes of slow, clear English about daily life, motivation and personal growth. Tell us in the comments: "I look up to... because...". Write one sentence in English.
