Police officers drove through a fake army checkpoint in Northern Ireland. They suspected something was wrong. Just forty five minutes later, two innocent football fans were murdered nearby. More than fifty years later, the questions surrounding that night remain unanswered.
On August 24, 1975, Sean Farmer and Colm McCartney were returning home from an All Ireland Gaelic football semi final at Croke Park in Dublin when they were shot dead near Newtownhamilton, County Armagh.
But what makes this double murder particularly disturbing is what happened BEFORE the killings.
A police patrol had already encountered the suspicious checkpoint. Officers discovered that no authorised military roadblock was operating in the area. Yet the killers remained at large.
Who were the armed men pretending to be soldiers? Who organised the checkpoint? And could these murders have been prevented?
Now, in October 2026, the case has returned to the headlines.
Sean Farmer's family has secured a civil settlement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, including an apology and undisclosed damages.
Meanwhile, a separate court case involving allegations of British security force involvement has been adjourned after new material emerged during proceedings. The Ministry of Defence denies liability, and the contents of the new material have not been publicly established.
In this CrimePulse Stories documentary, we investigate the murders of Sean Farmer and Colm McCartney, the suspicious checkpoint, the connections to the Glenanne Gang, the historical investigation, and the unanswered questions that continue to haunt their families.
More than half a century has passed.
Nobody has been convicted of murdering these two men.
And the full story of what happened that night remains unresolved.
