Golitha Falls is famous for its beautiful rapids, but hidden in the surrounding woodland is another piece of Cornwall’s industrial past. After following old paths through the granite landscape, we finally discover a mine shaft surrounded by a distinctive mound of spoil known as a mine burrow. We investigate how the shaft may have been used and explore a nearby adit — a horizontal tunnel that helped drain water from the mine. The geology tells its own story too. From shallow, weathered granite and orange iron-stained sand to heavily eroded paths, the landscape reveals the challenges faced by the people who worked these mines. We also find the adit entrance and look at how the shaft and tunnel may have worked together for drainage and ventilation. The exact details of the mine’s operation remain uncertain, but the surviving features offer fascinating clues. There’s more to Golitha Falls than waterfalls!    / @downtoearthgeologist   #GolithaFalls #CornishMining #CornwallGeology #MiningHistory #Granite #Geology #Cornwall
