Tonight you are on a high stone terrace, open to the sky. The valley below is asleep, the air is cold and perfectly still, and one star is rising in the east — the star the Romans called lucifer, the light-bringer, which was only ever their plain name for the morning star. Around that name the old world built its gravest and gentlest story: the brightest angel, the night he fell, and the war the old books say was fought in heaven. This is the whole of it — every layer the ancient world laid down, in the order it was written. The unfallen host of the Book of Jubilees, where the keeper of snow existed before snow did. The taunt-song of Isaiah and the anointed cherub of Ezekiel, walking among the stones of fire. The refusal. The war itself. The two hundred Watchers who came down on Mount Hermon and swore an oath they could not take back. Enoch the scribe, carrying a plea upward that would not be granted. The long binding in the desert, the four archangels who stayed, and the poets — Dante and Milton — who kept the vigil at the end and gave the story its final shape. Nothing here startles. Nothing asks to be remembered or solved. The voice stays near the floor of hearing the whole way through, and the morning star keeps its slow watch until the sky goes grey.
