Today's lesson is expanded form, laying the worth row of the place-value table out flat as a sum with a term for every column.
45,732 opens to 40,000 + 5,000 + 700 + 30 + 2, and those terms add straight back to the number
7,453 has four columns, so it opens to four terms: 7,000 + 400 + 50 + 3
A digit of zero gets no term, so 6,208 is 6,000 + 200 + 8 and 4,035 skips its hundreds
40,600 has five digits but a line of only two terms, 40,000 + 600, and a short line is not a mistake
The terms are worths, not digits, so 8 + 1 + 6 + 4 is not the expanded form of 8,164
Read the other way, the line 4,000 + 300 + 50 + 6 asks which number it adds back to
Pupils finish able to write a whole number within 100,000 as a sum of column worths and to recover the number a given sum adds to.
