Evagrius Ponticus — On the Eight Evil Spirits, in a fresh translation from the Via Patrum library (fathers.saneapps.com). 0:00 Introduction 1:56 On the Eight Evil Spirits 29:35 Sign-off Evagrius Ponticus (345–399), deacon of Constantinople turned desert father of Kellia in Egypt, was the first great cartographer of the Christian inner life. In On the Eight Evil Spirits he works through the eight 'thoughts' that besiege the solitary: gluttony, lust, avarice, sadness, anger, acedia, vainglory, and pride — naming how each one approaches the mind, what it whispers, and how it is beaten. Transmitted westward by John Cassian, Evagrius's eight became, in Gregory the Great's revision, the seven deadly sins. Read aloud in a fresh translation, with sentence-by-sentence read-along.
