Your child can already find a rectangle's area by multiplying its two
sides. This lesson asks what to do when the shape is NOT a rectangle. Buddy the
Bear takes an L-shaped floor plan on unit-square paper - a shape with no single
rows-times-columns that measures it - and cuts it with one straight slice into two
rectangles the child does know, finds each area, and adds them. Then he cuts the
very same floor a different way and gets a different pair of rectangles that still
add to the exact same total. The area never moved; only the way we found it did.
That is decomposing figures to find area.
WHAT IS IN THIS LESSON (Unit 10.6, decompose figures to find area)
Part 1 hello from Buddy - a floor that is not a rectangle at all
Part 2 meet the odd shape: count its squares and name it honestly
Part 3 the first cut: slice the L into a square and a strip, 4 + 4
Part 4 the second cut: slice the SAME floor a different way, 6 + 2
Part 5 a bigger ten-square plan, counted and then named
Part 6 cut it across: 2 + 8, and add back to ten
Part 7 cut it down: 6 + 4 - same floor, same total
Part 8 what we learned, and next time we put all of area together
CHAPTERS
0:00 Hello from Buddy: a floor that is not a rectangle
0:48 Meet the odd shape: count its squares and name it
2:21 The first cut: slice the L into a square and a strip
3:41 The second cut: same floor, different pieces, same area
5:35 A bigger ten-square plan, counted and named
6:24 Cut it across: 2 + 8 = 10
7:39 Cut it down: 6 + 4 = 10, and a mixed quiz
8:54 You cut it: name, compare and check the pieces
