Guyana is a country where the journey inland quickly becomes a journey into wilderness. Starting along the Atlantic coast, this trip moves through Georgetown, the Essequibo River, deep rainforest, open Rupununi savannah, the Kanuku and Pakaraima Mountains, and finally the remote Shell Beach.
Along the way, we explore Iwokrama’s vast rainforest, wildlife such as jaguars, giant river otters, giant anteaters, and harpy eagles, the dramatic landscapes around Mount Roraima, and the immense Kaieteur Falls. The journey then returns to the Atlantic, where mangroves, wetlands, scarlet ibis, flamingos, and nesting sea turtles reveal another side of Guyana.
What makes Guyana so difficult to capture in a single image? Rivers, forests, mountains, savannahs, wetlands, distance, weather, and changing water levels all shape how this country can be experienced—and help preserve a remarkable sense of scale across one of South America’s lesser-known landscapes.
