The Scottish wildcat looks like a rugged Highland tabby, but its DNA tells a very different story. After thousands of years of living alongside domestic cats with little mixing, the wildcat began losing its distinct genetic identity as habitat became fragmented and wild populations declined. Modern wild-living cats were found carrying between 11% and 74% domestic ancestry, creating a conservation problem that appearance alone cannot reveal. This video follows how that genetic swamping happened, from habitat loss and persecution to encounters with farm and feral cats. We also look at the conservation effort to rebuild a wildcat population in the Cairngorms, including captive breeding, genetic testing, GPS tracking, feral-cat management, and the first wild-born kittens. The bigger question is whether Scotland can create a self-sustaining wildcat population before domestic ancestry overwhelms it again. ⏱ Chapters 00:00 The Scottish Wildcat Is Disappearing 00:34 How to Recognize a True Wildcat 01:54 Where Scottish Wildcats Live and Hunt 02:29 The Collapse of the Wild Population 03:27 How Domestic Cats Changed the Gene Pool 04:18 Why Hybridization Accelerated 05:26 Genetic Swamping and Disease Resistance 06:09 When the Wildcat Became “Genomically Extinct” 06:54 The Captive-Breeding Lifeline 07:28 Releasing Wildcats Into the Cairngorms 08:14 The First Release and GPS Tracking 08:50 Wild-Born Kittens Arrive 09:23 Why Parentage Matters 10:00 Scotland’s Wildcat Strategy to 2045 10:37 Restoring Habitat and Genetic Connectivity 11:08 What Comes Next for Scottish Wildcats What do you think will be the biggest challenge in bringing a genetically distinct Scottish wildcat population back to the Highlands?
