A machinist forms a replacement guard bracket with the correct angle, yet the mounting holes do not line up. The flat blank was developed by adding the outside leg dimensions without accounting for the bend. Fixing the angle cannot restore missing or excess length. Forming needs a clear drawing interpretation, material and tooling selection, a suitable developed-length model, and inspection of the released result. This lesson connects those decisions through original examples. It is an editorial national extension, not a newly invented British Columbia task or a substitute for supervised equipment training.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Machinist learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Explain material, radius, heating and safety conditions governing a forming process.
• Calculate original bend allowance and developed lengths using explicit neutral-axis, angle and dimension assumptions.
• Explain supported forming methods, tooling load paths, springback, sequence and handling requirements.
• Identify forming defects and verify released geometry, material condition and documented acceptance.
CHAPTERS
0:00 A correct angle can still produce the wrong bracket
0:43 Forming changes shape through controlled permanent deformation
2:50 Measure the turning angle used by the development formula
4:56 Worked example: calculate one bend allowance
5:39 Add tangent straight lengths to the curved-zone length
6:21 Outside dimensions need a different geometric correction
7:05 Repeated bends require a separate accounting of each zone
7:52 Check sensitivity before treating a model as an exact blank
10:48 Bottoming and coining have different load requirements
13:00 Springback appears when the load is released
15:48 Worked inspection: calculate a defined ovality measure
21:09 Practice: develop a new blank with explicit assumptions
21:59 Answer: calculate the arc, then verify the real process
22:43 Keep a forming record that explains the result
23:26 Check three distinctions before releasing a forming plan
24:06 Develop the geometry and control the whole forming process
