Ep. 184 FINISHING PANEL 8 GLASSWORK ON THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY MOSAIC!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next little while. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. This week I am working on the glass mosaic for panel 8, finishing the second D in "Dunwoody." I am also working on fusing more foliage!
0:44 Here's where I'm starting this week. I talk a bit about these crazy blue inclusions that were fired four times in the kiln before I could use them.
1:41 I get after the blue sky with the crazy inclusions.
3:45 Next I start on the teal area at the top of the "D".
5:52 On this part, I'm going to start with the little swirl area that has the half-round cabochons because its my favorite! I apply the silicone to the substrate and stick the rounds on it. I found this to be less messy than gluing each one individually.
6:19 Then I take after the blue-green transition swath under the tree.
8:28 I'm back to fusing for panel 10. It takes some planning and I am using the paper copy since I don't have the real deal. My pieces are loosey goosey since I can't glue them yet. But I can easily see that there are a couple areas where I need to make more pieces.
9:15 I work on loading my kiln shelf and then before you know it, it's the next day and I'm opening the kiln! They look GREAT!!! I lay them out on my paper plan and see that I need to make more for certain areas. Then I load the kiln again! It takes about 90 minutes to make a load.
11:04 At this point, Jennifer starts talking about all the issues we face working in two different studios 45 minutes apart. Her video quality is not very good, but I included it anyway! To sum up,
1. Jennifer needs to work on her camera skills.
2. Neither one of us likes to drive back and forth.
3. It's a hassle not having all the panels.
4. We are 45 minutes apart. 90 minutes round trip!
Jennifer continues to show the edges and how important it is to match color choices and exact fit on the shapes because they feed into each other.
13:20 Jennifer is coming! I need to finish the glass on panel 8 and pick up the pieces that span the panels for installation later. She will be bringing me panel 10! Yay!
13:54 First I need to wrap up this fusing business because its on the floor and I don't want Jennifer to trip all over it!
14:52 Transition swath chit chat about color choices and the WHY behind what I choose.
16:17 I knock this area out in no time!
17:14 I work on taping up, labeling and storing the border pieces. It takes me about 20 minutes in real time.
20:05 Here's Jennifer! She had a nice break for Thanksgiving and a nice European river cruise.
We agree to a minor change in the design, even though it means we have extra work.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 184. Thanks for watching. See you next time!
