The Tortolita Gutpluckers have been entertaining Southern Arizona for over 50 years! The name of the group came from first playing together at archeological field sites in the Tortolita Mountains. String instruments were originally strung with animal guts, though the band has updated that tradition. The Gutpluckers play a variety of music including Old Timey, Country/Western, and Bluegrass that these desert denizens call “Brown Thorn!” The group playing here consists of:
Nick Busch-lead vocals and ‘Ol Timey Fiddle
William “Bill” Calder-lead guitar and harmony vocals
“Diamond” Jim Hewitt-fiddle, mandolin, lead and harmony vocals
Lane “Mad Doc” Johnson-rhythm guitar, lead and harmony vocals
Jim Lowell-Banjo and harmony vocals (RIP)
Dave Stephen-Wash Tub Bass and aphonic harmony vocals
Also appearing in the photos is Steve “Slim” Edelman-strings and harmony vocals
Whilst some of the members have moved on, the band continues with the next generation joining in.
