Durga Pujo is around the corner. But how do the lanes of India's biggest idol-making hub look? Kumartuli in North Kolkata, West Bengal, is known as India's largest potter’s hub, which makes thousands of Durga idols, Kali idols, and Saraswati idols sculpted from clay or mud. And this clay becomes even more sacred when the mud of Sonagachi gets mixed in it. To explore the process and lives of Kolkata’s artisans during Durga Puja, we walked through the workshops to see how a Durga idol is made, from the bamboo kathamo and straw binding (khar) to the layers of clay and the final sculpting of the face. This video tells the story of West Bengal’s clay artisans, without whom Durga Pujo feels incomplete. #kumartuli #durgapuja #kolkata #westbengal #kalipuja #mahalaya Disclaimer: This video is created for informational, educational, and entertainment purposes only.
