Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet: The Foundress Who Served the Elderly with Love! 🙏

Saint of the Day: Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet, Virgin and Foundress 🕯️ Today we honor Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet (1843–1897), a Spanish religious sister and foundress of the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly. Born Teresa Jornet e Ibars on January 9, 1843, in Aytona (Lleida), Spain, into a devout farming family, she became a teacher and felt a strong call to religious life. She first tried contemplative orders, including the Poor Clares, but her fragile health and her true vocation led her to active charity. In 1873, together with the priest Saturnino López Novoa, she founded the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly (Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados), a congregation dedicated to caring for the poor, sick, and abandoned elderly, giving them a home, dignity, and affection in their final years. She served as superior general, and the congregation grew rapidly, opening homes throughout Spain and beyond. She died on August 26, 1897, in Valencia, at age 54. She was beatified in 1958 by Pope Pius XII and canonized in 1974 by Pope Paul VI.
