TOORO’S NEW KING: PRINCE EDWARD KIIJANANGOMA IS NOW THE NEW OMUKAMA King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV: Life, Legacy & Final Farewell | Tooro Kingdom King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the late Omukama of Tooro, was laid to rest on September 12, 2026, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, Uganda, bringing to a close an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Tooro Kingdom. King Oyo died at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His passing marked the end of a remarkable 31-year reign that began in 1995, when he ascended the throne at just three years old following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His body was returned to Uganda on September 4, 2026, and taken to Tooro, where thousands of mourners, cultural leaders, politicians, friends, and members of the royal family gathered to pay their final respects. The funeral ceremonies included a church service at St. John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, followed by a procession to the royal tombs. King Oyo was laid to rest alongside his ancestors in a ceremony that brought together Christian traditions and the customs of the Tooro Kingdom. The Succession of the Tooro Kingdom Following King Oyo’s death, questions surrounding the succession became a major subject of discussion within the royal family and the wider Tooro community. While the family spoke of a reported son who could potentially be considered an heir, the Tooro royal clan selected Edward Rukidi Kijangoma, King Oyo’s cousin, as the new Omukama. Beyond the succession debate, King Oyo leaves behind a significant legacy. He became king as a young child and grew into one of Africa’s most recognisable traditional monarchs, representing the Tooro Kingdom for more than three decades. His journey was unique — from a three-year-old prince placed on the throne to an adult monarch who carried the cultural identity and aspirations of Tooro into a new generation. His burial marked the end of an extraordinary era. The people of Tooro have now said farewell to the king they watched grow from a child on the throne into a respected adult monarch.
