LeBron James took a 92% pay cut to chase one more ring in Philadelphia. So I went through every All-Star in NBA history who changed teams at 35 or older: 64 players, 103 moves, and only 5 titles. All five were won the same way, and it's the one role LeBron has never played.
In this video we use Basketball-Reference data on all 236 players with three or more All-Star selections to answer one question: has this ever worked?
• Why LeBron chose the veteran minimum in Philadelphia, and what his first game with Maxey, Jaylen Brown and Embiid really showed
• The full list: what happened to 103 aging stars in their first season on a new team
• The graveyard: Jordan in Washington, Hakeem in Toronto, the 2004 Lakers, Shaq's three stops, the Brooklyn trade, Kevin Durant's Houston year
• The only five who won a title, and the one thing they all had in common
• Ten reigning All-Stars changed teams at 35 or older. How many won? (Zero.)
• The eight old stars who came to play next to LeBron, and how that went
• Why LeBron breaks the pattern in both directions, and the three numbers to watch this season
• The 2026 class: Kawhi, DeRozan, Paul George, Klay and the rest
Method: a "move" counts when a player with 3+ NBA All-Star selections plays his first season (10+ games) for a new team at age 35 or older (Basketball-Reference season age). Franchise relocations and returns to the same team after retirement are not counted. The 2026-27 season is not part of the sample. Data as of October 22, 2026.
