One Week in the Village | Rural Life Before Winter

This week was full of work around the farm and village as we prepare for the long winter ahead. After a summer with very little rain, there is hardly any grass left for the cows to graze. So my son and I went out with the brush cutters to cut some grass on a neighbor's land. We spread the hay and later brought it into the barn for the winter. While I worked with the hay, my son prepared firewood, cutting and clearing two maple trees. Later, I took the ATV to the garden to harvest our pumpkins before the first frost. They are very small this year because of the dry weather, but we have to save what we managed to grow. The cows stayed nearby while I worked, and from time to time I gave them some of the smallest pumpkins. They certainly enjoyed them! I also went into the forest and came home with a basket of wild mushrooms. Back at home, my son was preparing dough for bread, and later he fried the mushrooms in oil and flour for us to eat. There was still plenty of work to do — cleaning an old well near the house, collecting apples, bringing firewood home, cutting logs with the chainsaw and branches with the circular saw, and finally loading and storing the hay in the barn. This video shows almost a whole week of our everyday rural life — working together, taking care of the animals, harvesting what the garden gave us, gathering food from the forest, and getting everything ready before winter arrives.
