Dr. Vignesh Pushparaj | ஊசி மூலம் முதுகு வலியை குணப்படுத்த முடியுமா?|Annaamalai Ortho and Spine Center In the previous video, what is spine, what is disc, what is spine bone, what is disc prolapse, disc prolapse up to 95% does not require surgery, is what we saw. Similarly, in the last video itself, due to the body's own healing mechanism acute disc prolapse is rectified is what we had told. Until one recovers, how to manage the pain? That is the important question, for which I will tell you the options today. Not everyone gets the pain due to disc prolapse. The protrusion of the gel-like substance is disc prolapse. The gel that is protruding touches the nerve near it. Be it a mild touch or a lot of pressure the nerve swells up. Since the nerve swells up due to irritation, we experience pain. So, the pain is not due to the disc prolapse. The disturbance of the nerve caused by disc prolapse is why there is pain. Reducing the inflammation will reduce our pain. So the treatment option for this is, selective nerve root block, as we call it. Similar to an x-ray machine, there is a machine in the operation theatre. It is called C-Arm. Using that machine, the nerve is properly located, if we give an injection near the nerve, it would help in reducing the inflammation. So the body itself, using its own healing mechanism will rectify the protrusion of the gel-like disc. We indirectly, by giving medicine, can reduce the inflammation of the nerve. So the patient will also be relieved from the pain. So, how many times can this injection be given? For a person, in their entire lifetime, this injection can be given more than 3 or 4 times. That being the case, one need not have fear about this injection. Does giving this injection lead to any complication? 100% there is no complication about this injection. This is an anti-inflammatory injection. It is an injection given in an area that has inflammation. Therefore, the inflammation reduces, and the pain reduces. For a few people, there might be no pain for three weeks. For some, there might be no pain for 6 weeks. For some people the pain will completely vanish. So, Selective nerve root block is not a definitive procedure. As the gel-like substance has moved out causing the nerve to swell up, this procedure reduces the swelling and therefore our pain. This is neither a surgical treatment, and there is no need to get admitted in the hospital for this. You can come in the morning, get the injection and leave for home in two hours. So, the first time we have seen that disc prolapse does not need surgery. Secondly, we have seen what selective nerve root block is. And we have also seen when it can be administered. Next, for the remaining 5% percent population with disc prolapse, we will see how to go about with their treatment in the next video.
