Valley of Fires Recreation Area, New Mexico

Welcome to the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. Valley of Fires is located along U.S. Highway 380, four miles west of Carrizozo, and 56 miles east of San Antonio, in south-central New Mexico. Approximately 2,000 to 5,000 years ago, lava spewed from volcanic vents, slowly filling the Tularosa Basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is 44 miles long, 4 to 6 miles wide, more than 160 feet thick near the center and covers an area of 125 square miles.
