In the most densely populated state in America, 11 New Jersey towns somehow got skipped — same buildings, same street grid, in a few cases the same families in the same houses. We walk through iron villages, oyster ports, company towns, and a square mile of Victorian houses where the rules were enforced by an association instead of a mayor. One of these places was emptied out by the federal government for a project that never happened, and another still fills up with canvas tents every summer with a waiting list measured in decades. Not ruins, not museums — just towns that stopped, and never got around to starting again.
