What happens when you can feel something deeply—but you cannot find the words to explain it?
In this episode of Mazari Talks, I explore a very personal question: can losing touch with our language also make us feel more emotionally isolated?
I live between Urdu, English, and Czech, and sometimes I notice that one language gives me a word for a feeling that another language cannot express so easily. Czech words such as stesk, lítost, dojetí, nesvůj, English expressions such as bittersweet, overwhelmed, closure, and beautiful Urdu expressions such as کسک، خلش، بے کلی، دل اُچاٹ، دل بھر آنا all describe slightly different emotional experiences.
Maybe the problem is not that Urdu lacks emotional depth. Perhaps our everyday Urdu vocabulary is becoming smaller, while we increasingly depend on English words such as stressed, depressed, overwhelmed, insecure, and awkward.
This video also explores the psychological idea of emotional differentiation—our ability to recognize whether we are actually sad, lonely, disappointed, jealous, ashamed, helpless, nostalgic, or simply exhausted.
This is not a claim that language directly causes clinical depression. Depression is a complex mental-health condition. My question is more personal and philosophical:
If I cannot accurately name what I am feeling, does it become harder for me to understand myself?
And perhaps learning another language does something unexpected—it does not only teach us new ways to speak. Sometimes it gives us names for feelings that were already living inside us.
Tell me in the comments:
What is one word in Urdu, Czech, English, Punjabi, Pashto, Turkish, Arabic, or another language that is almost impossible to translate perfectly?
