🇸🇪 Cost of Living in Stockholm, Sweden 2026
How much money does a single student need to live in Stockholm for the first month? What is the monthly budget for a student living with a spouse? In this video, I explain the approximate first-month living expenses in Stockholm, including rent, groceries, transportation, and the Swedish ID card fee.
This video is especially useful for Pakistani students, international students, and couples who are planning to move to Stockholm for study, work, or family life.
First-month expenses for a single student
In this video, I explain the estimated expenses for one student living alone in Stockholm.
🏠 Rent for one student: approximately 4,000 SEK, which is around 120,000 PKR
🛒 Grocery for one student: approximately 3,500 SEK, which is around 100,000 PKR
🚇 Transportation with an SL card: approximately 360 SEK, which is around 10,000 PKR
🪪 Swedish ID card application fee: approximately 400 SEK, which is around 11,000 PKR
The estimated total for the first month is approximately 8,260 SEK, or around 241,000 PKR. This estimate includes the Swedish ID card fee, which is normally a one-time first-month cost rather than a regular monthly expense.
First-month expenses for a couple
I also discuss the estimated budget for a student living in Stockholm with a spouse.
🏠 Rent for a couple: approximately 8,000 SEK, which is around 250,000 PKR
🛒 Grocery for a couple: approximately 7,000 SEK, which is around 200,000 PKR
🚇 Transportation for two people: approximately 920 SEK, calculated as 360 SEK plus 560 SEK, which is around 25,000 PKR
🪪 Swedish ID card fees for two people: approximately 800 SEK, which is around 22,000 PKR
The estimated total for the first month for a couple is approximately 16,720 SEK, or around 497,000 PKR.
This is an estimated budget. Your actual expenses may be different depending on your rent, location, food choices, transportation needs, and lifestyle.

Swedish ID card fee
The Swedish Tax Agency ID card application fee is approximately 400 SEK per person. Therefore, the estimated cost for two people is approximately 800 SEK.
Always check the latest requirements before applying for the Swedish ID card.
Important information about these calculations
The Pakistani rupee amounts in this video are approximate conversions. Currency exchange rates change regularly, so the PKR amount may be different when you watch this video.
The estimated cost can also change because of:
✅ Rent and deposit requirements
✅ Shared accommodation or private accommodation
✅ Distance from the university
✅ Food preferences
✅ Halal food and imported products
✅ Mobile phone and internet costs
✅ Clothing and personal shopping
✅ Medical and medicine expenses
✅ Study materials and books
✅ Winter clothing
✅ Leisure and entertainment
✅ Travel outside Stockholm
✅ Unexpected expenses
The budget in this video focuses mainly on rent, groceries, SL transportation, and the Swedish ID card fee. It does not include every possible expense.
Before coming to Sweden, students should prepare an emergency fund. It is better to bring enough money for the first few months because finding accommodation, receiving documents, opening a bank account, and managing initial expenses can take time.
