Watch the Short:    • Who Knew Glowing Paint Was Poison? #Shorts   📚 The book behind this story: The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore ▶ https://bookshop.org/a/130199/9781492... (Affiliate link — I earn a commission if you buy through it, which also supports independent bookstores.) From 1917, young women at the U.S. Radium Corporation's studio in Orange, New Jersey, painted glowing radium paint onto watch and instrument dials, and were taught to shape their brushes with their lips ("lip, dip, paint"). They were told it was safe. The company's own chemists used lead screens, masks and tongs. When painters began falling ill, the company hired Harvard's Cecil and Katherine Drinker, whose 1924 report blamed the radium — and, by Harvard's own account, New Jersey's Department of Labor was then handed a version altered to say every girl was in perfect condition. The Drinkers published the real findings in 1925. In 1928, five dying former painters — Grace Fryer, Edna Hussman, Katherine Schaub, Quinta McDonald and Albina Larice — took the company to court and won a settlement, and their story helped change workplace safety and radiation protection for decades.
