Wellbeing at work is broader than job satisfaction: it asks whether work is contributing to people’s health and happiness or causing harm. This lesson introduces four connected dimensions of workplace wellbeing: physical, intellectual, emotional and social. It explains how physical strain, pressure, stress and workplace relationships can reinforce one another, making wellbeing an important organisational and people-management concern. You will explore current pressures including mental health challenges, hybrid working, workload, job insecurity, isolation and insufficient management support, alongside their effects on absence, performance, trust and team capacity. The lesson also considers why supportive leadership matters. Regular check-ins, fair workload distribution and psychological safety can strengthen wellbeing, while cultures that normalise overwork can undermine even well-designed initiatives. Finally, it highlights the need for targeted support, recognising that frontline workers, remote employees and new joiners may experience different pressures. The aim is not to remove every source of stress, but to prevent stress becoming chronic, unsupported and damaging.
