Volkswagen Beetle (1938–2003): The Car Britain Refused for Free

In 1945, the Volkswagen factory at Wolfsburg was offered to the British motor industry completely free of charge. Sir William Rootes inspected it, called the car too ugly and too noisy, and told the young British officer running the plant that the whole project would collapse within two years. Ford's assessment was that the car simply was not worth a damn. Every expert who looked at it walked away. They were wrong by 21,529,464 cars. This is the full history of the Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1) — from Ferdinand Porsche's original 1938 design, through the war years, the bombed-out factory that was scheduled for demolition, and the twenty-eight-year-old British Army major who saved it. Then on to America, where exactly two were sold in the first year, and the 1959 advertising campaign that turned every one of the car's flaws into the reason people bought it.
