Nowa Huta: The Communist City That Defied Its Creators
*DESCRIPTION*
Nowa Huta was supposed to be a model socialist city — built from scratch beside Kraków, centred around a huge steelworks and designed for a new industrial working population.
But the story didn't quite go according to plan.
In this fourth episode of my Kraków series, I explore a district that becomes more interesting the deeper you look. Beneath the monumental architecture and broad avenues lies a much older history, from the medieval Cistercian Abbey at Mogiła to the mysterious Wanda Mound.
We also follow the remarkable struggle to build a church in a city originally planned without one — including the violent defence of the Nowa Huta Cross in 1960 and the eventual construction of the distinctive Arka Pana.
Then we head underground into Nowa Huta's Cold War shelters, explore how the district deals with the symbols of its communist past, and discover a very different side of modern Nowa Huta through the works of Zdzisław Beksiński and Jerzy Duda-Gracz, its parks, arcade museum and one particularly unusual apartment block.
The first time I visited Nowa Huta, I barely understood what I was looking at.
Several visits later, I realised that's part of what makes this district so interesting.
The history doesn't always announce itself.
You have to go looking for it.
And if some of the stranger places in this episode are new to you, then just wait until the final chapter of the series — when we leave Kraków's famous districts behind completely and take the path less travelled.
