Bach wrote it as an instrumental opening for a church cantata — a short sinfonia
for solo oboe and strings, barely four minutes long, sitting quietly before the
singing started. He reused the same material in a harpsichord concerto. Neither
version was meant to be the point of anything.
It became one of the most played melodies he ever wrote, usually at funerals,
under the name Arioso, which Bach never gave it.
What makes it work is already there in the score: a long singing line on top, and
underneath it, plucked strings pulsing steadily and never stopping. Melody and
frame, written separately, three hundred years ago.
So we left the melody alone. Across this session the accompaniment changes
completely — the pulse hardens, the harmony slides into minor, the layers thicken
until the weight underneath is enormous. The cello line does not react to any of
it. Same tempo, same volume, same phrasing, from the first track to the last. The
storm happens around it.
Composed with AI tools under our own creative direction. The melody is Bach's;
the decision to leave it untouched while everything else moved was ours.
