The Dark Story of Rockwood Hall: The Rockefeller PALACE the Rockefellers Paid to DESTROY The official version takes one sentence. In the winter of 1941, a Rockefeller who owned an empty house on the Hudson had no use for it, so he had it torn down. But that house had 204 rooms. It was the second-largest private home in America, built by William Rockefeller, the brother of John D. In 1912, a deputy sent by Congress walked through its halls with a subpoena and left without the man he came for. The doctor's note said William could not speak above a whisper. Thirty years later, the wreckers hauled 400 tons of steel and 40 tons of lead out of the house and sold whole rooms, fireplaces included. The family that built it had paid to make it disappear. And it all goes back to a letter a nephew wrote in 1921, while his uncle was still living in that house.
