The Isle of Mull in Scotland is way more beautiful than you think. This amazing island is part of the Inner Hebrides and is easily accessible by car or foot on a ferry from the Highlands town of Oban, gateway to the Scottish Isles.
After an incredible cycle trip from Inverness to Oban along the Sustrans Caledonia Way Route 78, we arrived back at our car, loaded the bikes and headed for the ferry terminal in Oban. The 45 minute journey on the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, MV Isle of Mull, soon had us landed in Craignure where we were booked to camp at Shieling Holidays for 3 nights. With rain in Scotland pretty much a certainty, we were well prepared. Our tried and tested Dometic Santorini 2x4 inflatable tent had already proven to be wind and waterproof, and we had packed our king size inflatable mattress to ensure a good nights sleep. We love to cook outdoors, and that is also a breeze on a Campingaz Camping Chef stove DLX, and our trusty Weber Smokey Joe portable barbecue. To complete the set up, a Subcold Roam portable fridge and freezer keeps everything cold and fresh. Shieling holidays have powered sites available so we left our Anker Solix c1000 Gen 2 portable power unit at home for this trip.
With only two full days available to explore the island, we headed straight out the next morning. The Highlands weather was true to form, and rain and wind was exactly what we got. No time to let the weather dictate however, and first on the itinerary was a visit the historic Duart castle, a mere ten minutes from our campsite. After an interesting castle tour and a cup of tea and cake at the cafe, we took the beautifully scenic drive up to the picturesque town of Tobermory. Well known for it's brightly painted buildings, it was originally built as a fishing port in the late 18th century. The harbour is bustling with fishing boats, yachts and ferries and is a must for a visit. Our drive continued towards Calgary bay and returned through beautiful mountains on the way back to Craignure. The next morning we headed South in wet and windy weather for the small scenic village of Fionnphort, where we caught the quick ferry across to the historic Isle of Iona. After a quick ten minute crossing of the Sound of Iona, on a rather lumpy sea, we battled the rain and wind to explore the Iona Nunnery and Abbey. One of the oldest Christian religious centres in Western Europe, it was a focal point for the spread of Christianity. It was built around the 13th century.
Sadly we had run out of time, and we would have loved another 3 or 4 days to explore the rest of the Island. A trip out to Staffa and Fingal's Cave will be on the cards for our next visit.
