Kakamega County General Hospital is a major regional referral facility serving approximately 1.8 million people in Western Kenya. Before the intervention, the hospital had only one operating room and limited, outdated or unreliable equipment. Ophthalmic surgery was being undertaken on a temporary basis using borrowed equipment. The project responded to the need for a dedicated ophthalmic operating room so that patients with conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy and other vision disorders could receive appropriate treatment closer to home. The grant supported the creation of a dedicated, properly equipped ophthalmic surgery suite and provided equipment to strengthen the wider surgical capacity of the hospital. The project also included staff training, medical technology, monitoring and evaluation, and continued specialist learning through telehealth and visiting medical teams.
