A British Ford Kuga owner was quoted £8,500 by a main dealer for a new short block after coolant leaked into cylinder one. Ford offered 40% as a "goodwill" gesture, leaving a bill of £5,500 on a car worth less than that. In America, owners took Ford to court over the same fault and won.
This is the second engine crisis list. Thirteen more engines destroying themselves on British roads, seventeen badges, and not one of them appeared in the first video.
Counted down: the Volvo VEA oil pump belt nobody knows exists. The VW EA288 with no official belt replacement interval at all. The Ford 1.8 TDCi fuel pump belt. The Toyota D4D, brought down not by the engine but by the particulate filter bolted to it. The Renault 1.5 dCi, which is also in the Qashqai, Juke, Duster and Sandero. The Honda 1.0 VTEC Turbo, built at Swindon, with a wet belt. The VW EA189 from the emissions scandal, where the software fix made the filter clog faster. The Ford Duratorq turbo oil feed. The Nissan M9R. The Ford 2.0 EcoBlue in every Transit since 2016, where the particulate filter dilutes the oil the timing belt sits in. The 1.6 TDCi and HDi shared by Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Mini, Volvo and Mazda. And at one and two, the Ford 1.6 and 1.5 EcoBoost — where the fix isn't a gasket, it's the bottom half of the engine.
Six of the thirteen are Fords. The video explains why that isn't a coincidence, and why the 1.5 EcoBoost in many UK Kugas was built at Bridgend — a plant Ford closed in 2020.
Also covered: what a particulate filter actually is and why short journeys destroy one, why turbochargers die of oil starvation rather than wear, and the three things that prevent almost every failure on this list.
Which of these have you owned? Did it fail, and what did the bill come to? Tell me in the comments.
