Cutting Down a Giant Tree for My Starving Mother Buffalo to Save Her 5-Day-Old Calf Welcoming a fragile five-day-old baby buffalo to Golden Ridge Farm brings immense joy, but keeping the tiny calf alive requires making sure his exhausted mother has enough food to produce rich milk. Seeing the nursing mother starving after giving birth, I rushed to chop fresh elephant grass & hillside leaves into their manger before guiding the mother & her wobbly calf down to the forest stream, where I climbed up & cut down lush green trees so she could feast & regain her strength before I lit a warm smoky fire by their pen at dusk. Together with my mother, I also led the entire buffalo herd deep into the steep mountain ravine, scaling rugged slopes with my machete to chop bundles of wild grass & tender foliage to toss down for the hungry herd while the newborn calf stayed safely beside his mother. Back at the farmyard, I scrubbed the long feeding trough clean, rolled heavy carts of warm mash out to feed our 100 hungry black pigs, piglets, & heavily pregnant sow, & tended to our mother hen with her baby chicks. To finish our work on the homestead, I chopped wooden stakes from the forest to reinforce our wire fence, cleared the mustard greens bed, & helped my mother plant a new spring crop of corn across our hillside field.
