“Is This How My Story Is Told” is a deeply emotional Christian Country and Southern Gospel song about regret, redemption, and the fear that the worst chapters of our lives will become the only things people remember about us. It begins with a man looking back over burned bridges, painful mistakes, wasted years, and people he wishes he had never hurt. With time moving forward and yesterday impossible to change, he asks a heartbreaking question: when my final page is turned, will my failures be the story I leave behind?
The song then moves from regret toward hope. In the middle of the shame comes the Father’s quiet reminder: “Your story ain’t told.” With nowhere left to hide, the broken man comes to the cross carrying everything he cannot undo. He has no excuses, no goodness to offer, and no way to rewrite yesterday—yet Jesus reaches for him anyway. Mercy begins writing something that regret never could.
Then the song erupts into its defining declaration: “NO! THIS AIN’T HOW MY STORY IS TOLD!” What began as a sorrowful reflection becomes a testimony of redemption. The scars are still part of the story, and the failures are not denied, but they no longer get to write the ending. The final word belongs to mercy, forgiveness, and a Savior who refused to let go.
“Is This How My Story Is Told” carries one powerful message: your past may explain where you have been, but it does not have to decide how your story ends. We may not be able to rewrite yesterday, but through the mercy of God, yesterday does not get the final word.

"IS THIS HOW MY STORY IS TOLD"
I’ve walked some roads I wish I’d never known,
Burned some bridges, wound up all alone.
Said some words I’d give anything to take back,
Lost some years I’ll never get back.
I’ve hurt the ones who only gave me love,
Turned from the Father when the road got rough.
Now I’m looking back as the years unfold,
Wondering, “Is this how my story is told?”
Is this how my story is told?
By all my mistakes and the scars that I hold?
When the final page turns and my days are all gone,
Will they only remember the things I did wrong?
Father, I’m asking before I grow old,
Please don’t let this be how my story is told.
I can’t go back and undo yesterday,
Can’t gather the words that I threw away.
But somewhere beneath all the hurt in my soul,
I hear the Father whisper,
“Your story ain’t told.”
So I came to the cross with nowhere to hide,
Laid every regret I was carrying inside.
I had nothing to offer, no goodness to show—
Still Jesus reached for me
And wouldn’t let go.
Still He loved me.
Still He forgave.
Still He reached down
When I’d lost my way—
NO! THIS AIN’T HOW MY STORY IS TOLD!
I’M MORE THAN THE WRECKAGE,
MORE THAN THE OLD!
I’M HELD BY A MERCY
THAT WON’T LET ME GO!
THE BLOOD OF MY SAVIOR
HAS MADE THIS HEART WHOLE,
AND LOVE WROTE THE ENDING
TO A STORY ONCE BROKE!
LET THEM SAY I WAS BROKEN!
LET THEM SAY THAT I FELL!
BUT TELL THEM MY FATHER
STILL LOVED ME AS WELL!
TELL THEM THAT MERCY
CAME CALLING ME HOME,
AND JESUS STOOD WAITING
WHEN I COULDN’T GO ON.
I was lost...
but He brought me home.
I was guilty...
but mercy took hold.
I thought my mistakes
would be all they would know...
But mercy had the final word.
And that...
is how my story is told.
