Anthony Bourdain says everyone carries a Rome around in their head, and it is almost never the real one. So he throws out the postcard. No Colosseum, no Trevi Fountain, no Vatican. Guided by Italian actress and director Asia Argento, he spends the week in the parts of the city Romans actually live in, and it turns out darker and funnier than any guidebook would allow.
They drive out to Ostia, the seaside suburb where the poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini was beaten to death in 1975. A monument stands near the spot now. Nothing about the neighbourhood looks like a crime scene, which is exactly Tony’s point about this city — the terrible and the ordinary share the same street. Afterwards they drink in a Sardinian bar where the regulars are not impressed by anybody, including him.
Filmmaker Abel Ferrara, a New Yorker who came here and never left, turns up to eat and talk and admits he has not been sober since he was sixteen. At a trattoria with nothing worth photographing on the outside, the pasta arrives the way it has arrived for decades, and Tony stops performing for a while and just eats.
The episode ends where it began, in EUR, the district Mussolini built to show the world what fascism looked like in marble. Tony stands in the middle of it and says the obvious out loud: it needed someone who promised to make Italy great again, and it worked. It can happen anywhere, he says. It happened here.
