Battle of the Engines: From Radial to Jet. The Engineering Marvels of World War II

WWII aircraft engines, P-51 Mustang history, and the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine take center stage in this comprehensive military aviation documentary. Discover how the skies over Europe became a fierce technological battleground during the Second World War. As the British Royal Air Force and the German Luftwaffe fought for air superiority, the need for high-altitude speed and power became paramount. The United States had focused heavily on radial engines, which were reliable but less streamlined, while European designers favored sleek, liquid-cooled V-12 inline engines like the Daimler-Benz 605 and the Rolls-Royce Merlin. When the deadly German Focke-Wulf 190 arrived on the scene, utilizing a powerful BMW 801 radial engine wrapped in a tight aerodynamic cowl, it devastated British Spitfires. In desperate need of a countermeasure, Rolls-Royce engineers developed a two-stage, two-speed supercharged Merlin engine. This innovation dramatically increased airflow in thin, high-altitude environments. At the same time, North American Aviation had built the P-51 Mustang, an aircraft with advanced laminar flow wings but severely hampered by the lack of a turbocharger on its Allison V-1710 engine. At the urging of test pilot Ronald Hawker, the new Merlin 61 was mated with the Mustang airframe, creating the ultimate war-winning escort fighter. To meet the incredible demand, Packard manufactured the engines under license in the United States as the V-1650. Equipped with these powerplants and external drop tanks, P-51Bs and P-51Ds were finally able to escort American heavy bombers all the way to Berlin and back, decimating the Luftwaffe's interceptor force and shifting the tide of the war.
