"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" Leonardo da Vinci affirmed more than 500 hundred years ago. No sentence could fit the house protagonist of this episode of Houses of the Month better.
Kieran and Geralyn White guide us on a very special virtual tour of Ballysallagh, their small but delightful country house from the early Georgian period. The architectural harmony, balance and compactness of the building, inside and out of which extreme simplicity and some details of exquisite elegance coexist, make Ballysallagh an unicum of great value. The house was in a state of neglect when the Whites discovered it in 1987: they bought and restored it carefully and authentically, furnishing it with great taste. In December 2020, Ballysallagh was the winner of the inaugural O’Flynn Group Heritage Prize, an award devised by the architectural historian Robert O’Byrne in association with Historic Houses of Ireland to draw attention to the particular challenges faced by owners of historic properties in Ireland.
