A radio call, and the answer to it: by the end of this lesson you'll be able to make one yourself, and understand every word that comes back. In Episode 4 of Learn to Fly, your instructor Cindy takes a Cessna 172 from the apron at Wonderboom to the holding point, making every call on the way: asking to start, asking to taxi, crossing a runway and calling the tower. In this lesson: • Clearances, and the two frequencies: Ground and Tower, in the radio's two windows • The phonetic alphabet, and how a registration becomes a callsign • The four parts of a first call: who you're calling, who you are, where you are and what you want • Using the transmit button, and what to do when nobody answers or you hear "standby" • Numbers one digit at a time (tree, fife, niner), and frequencies with "decimal" • Readbacks: what we read back, and why "roger" isn't enough • What an ATIS is, the taxi clearance, holding points and crossing a runway • "Ready for departure", "line up and wait", "say again", "affirm" and "negative", and why never "over and out" • Three mistakes students often make This series shows you what happens and why. It doesn't replace flying with a qualified instructor; always use your aircraft's own handbook and checklist and current local rules.
