What does alpha sound like? Or pi? Or omega? In this video, I turn all 24 letters of the Greek alphabet, capital and lowercase, into sound. As each letter's real outline is traced, its height is mapped to pitch, so every curve, corner and straight line plays its own melody in real time.
Every letter comes with how it sounds, what scientists and mathematicians use it for, and a fun fact: did you know the word "alphabet" is just alpha + beta? Or that the X in "Xmas" is really the Greek letter chi?
Which letter sounds best to you? Tell me in the comments, and tell me which symbols or shapes you'd like to hear next. Like and subscribe for more sonification experiments!

HOW IT WORKS
Each outline is the letter's real shape from the Cambria typeface, with every contour kept. Letters made of separate parts, like Θ or Ξ, are traced part by part, just like writing them by hand. As the outline is drawn, its height is mapped exponentially to frequency (about 100 Hz to 2000 Hz) to match how we hear pitch. The voice is mostly a square wave with a little sine wave for warmth, with a gentle vibrato. No notes were composed by hand: what you hear is the shape itself.
