You may not be familiar with Texas panhandle hiking, or generally with hiking in Texas, but this canyon hike is one of the best day hikes in Texas! The centerpiece of Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the Lighthouse - a unique geological structure you'll have to see to believe.
Palo Duro Canyon is approximately 120 miles long, with an average width of 6 miles. Much like the Grand Canyon, there are several distinct layers of rock visible in the canyon walls. The canyon features unique rock formations, like hoodoos. The most iconic of these is the Lighthouse, which rises 310 feet above the canyon floor!
Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located approximately 30 minutes southeast of Amarillo. The Lighthouse Trail is an out-and-back trail, which is about 5.5 miles round-trip. Most of the trail is relatively flat and exposed to the sun, but the last quarter mile of the trail is relatively steep and rocky. The trail takes you all the way up to the base of the Lighthouse, which is a popular location for photos.
As always, our hiking and backpacking videos are filmed in 4K Ultra HD. YouTube will automatically tailor the video quality to your device, but we suggest viewing on your 4K-compatible television, or device, for best viewing results.
